Systematics of Pleioblastus and the Arundinaria Bamboo Complex (Poaceae) in East Asia and North America.

THE Arundinaria Bamboo Complex (Arundinaria, Pleioblastus, Pseudosasa, Bashania, Oligostachyum, Indocalamus, and Ferrocalamus) is a poorly understood but taxonomically critical group in the North Temperate (NT) clade of woody bamboos (Poaceae: Bambusoideae). Although the NT clade receives strong support in molecular studies, sequence data thus far offer weak internal resolution and little or no support for genera recognized on the basis of morphology. Our investigation is directed towards a revision of the Asiatic genus Pleioblastus and its North American relative Arundinaria based on a phylogenetic analysis of combined molecular and morphological data. Here we present results from an ongoing study using coding and non-coding sequence data (e.g., ndhF, trnD-T), amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) and structural characters. In our current reconstructions, North American Arundinaria species form a well-supported clade that is not the immediate sister of Pleioblastus or Pseudosasa, and the Arundinaria Bamboo Complex does not appear to be monophyletic. Pleioblastus appears to consist of at least two clades, within which are embedded species of Pseudosasa, Sasaella, and Chinese representatives of Arundinaria: mainland East Asian elements (Pleioblastus Section Amari and Pseudosasa subgenus Sinicae) are supported as the sister clade of species in the Japan archipelago. The current results suggest that vegetative characters (e.g., branching patterns) used to recognize genera need to be carefully reevaluated. The utility of morphological characters used in previous classifications and the implications of our results for future classification through the Bamboo Phylogeny Group project are discussed.
