Phylogeny of subtribe Gonolobinae (Apocynaceae).

THE correct taxonomic placement of many Gonolobinae milkweeds, a group of New World twining vines, are not known. Seven genera are included here in a molecular phylogenetic analysis using the chloroplast intergenic spacer trnC-rpoB and the rpl16 intron. Matelea, currently the largest genus in this group, may not be monophyletic. Implications for taxonomic revisions and biogeography are also discussed.
